Mixed Media & Encaustic Paintings

Inspired by nature, vintage finds and human connections.

My process

Hello! My name is Stacy and I am a Mixed Media Encaustic Artist. Encaustic is refined beeswax mixed with damar resin. It is one of the oldest art forms and means to burn in. I paint with a torch, adding in several layers of paint and fusing between each layer.

My art encompasses a lot of adding and subtracting. I typically start out with multiple layers, working intuitively at first, asking what if and then, just doing it. I step back, I sit with the art, and I let the piece speak to me, sometimes covering up what is not working and uncovering what is. This process of concealing and revealing could take a few days, several weeks, or a few hours. Some pieces come together easily while others take their time to evolve. I keep creating and evolving until the art and I finally arrive to its final destination.

I enjoy incorporating things that are not usually used for art. Building materials, items from nature, salvaged rusty bits, tea and coffee, found objects and little treasures, and remnants of old books are just a few oddities you will find in my art. It’s with these unique materials that I create what I’m seeing, feeling and experiencing. The ebb and flow of art and materials, letting them guide me without a known outcome. Like each art piece speaks to me so does each material.
