Jeanne Baret was the first female to circumnavigate the globe. She disguised herself as a man, calling herself Jean Baret and wrapping her chest in bandages. She enlisted as valet and assistant to the 1766 expedition's naturalist, who was also her lover. When Jeanne returned to France, the Navy paid tribute to "this extraordinary woman" and her work of gathering new species of plants by giving her a pension of 200 livres a year.
