Five Unexpected Art Supplies

I thought it might be fun to share with you five supplies that I use all of the time, but that might not be considered an art supply.

Number one: Oven Mat

I use black oven mats to protect my glass surface. They catch most of the encaustic wax drips, are heat and fire resistant, and are easy to clean.

Number two: Cigar boxes

The cigar boxes store my encaustic paint. They are light weight, sturdy, and easy to stack. I made labels for the outside of the boxes so that I know the color inside the box.

Number three: Silicone Molds

They are heat resistant, the wax does not stick to them and they are flexible. Making them great for pouring my hand made encaustic paint and medium into. The paint then cools and I have these encaustic bricks ready to go.

Number Four: Apron

This is a more likely art supply, but one that I don’t think about. I use my hand sewn apron every time I paint. I am a very messy painter and this apron has saved more clothes than I care to admit. Wax does not come off of fabric.

Number Five: Scrapers

Another tool that I use every time I paint are my scrapers. I have several sizes and use them to scrape away wax and uncover bits of a painting.

I share a few more art supplies I can’t live without in the video below.

I hope this was inspiring and that you have a better insight into my process. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out.
